People come to an English course with different experiences. Some have studied English for years but have had few opportunities to speak it. Others can hold a conversation quite comfortably but struggle with grammar or writing. Some are returning to English after a long break, while others want to improve for their studies or career.
It’s not always easy to know which level is right for you. You might remember a lot from previous courses but find that using English in everyday situations is harder than you expected. Or perhaps you understand English well but struggle to express yourself as clearly as you’d like.
Choosing a course that is too easy or too difficult can make learning harder than it needs to be.
That’s why it’s worth finding out where you really stand before you begin.
Knowing English and Using English Are Not the Same Thing
One of the difficulties in judging your own level is that not all language skills develop at the same pace. You might follow a conversation without much trouble but hesitate when it’s your turn to speak. You may know the grammar rules but find it difficult to use them naturally. This doesn’t mean you haven’t learned English. It simply means that some skills may need more attention than others.
We’ve seen many different learning journeys at Lincoln since we opened in Tirana in 1997. No two learners are exactly alike. Someone who has studied English for years may need to work on skills that another learner has developed more easily. That’s why the number of years you’ve studied English isn’t always a reliable guide to your level.
Why an English Placement Test Matters
Imagine joining a class where you already know most of the material. You might feel comfortable at first, but you could soon become bored because you’re not learning much that is new. Now imagine joining a class where the lessons move too quickly and you struggle to keep up. You may lose confidence, even if you’re motivated to learn.
A suitable level gives you room to improve without feeling overwhelmed. You can build on what you already know while working on the areas that need attention. Of course, progress also takes practice, regular attendance, and a willingness to learn. But starting in the right place makes the whole process more worthwhile.
Find Out Where You Stand
After nearly three decades of helping people learn English in Tirana, we know that choosing a course is easier when you have a clearer idea of your current level. Guessing can lead you to a class that doesn’t match your needs, while a more informed choice gives you a better place to begin.
