Planning a Grammar Lesson

by | 10.27.2014

I’d like to share my experience regarding the way grammar items are planned and presented.
While planning a grammar lesson I always try to incorporate in my class the followings:
1. Build context /set the atmosphere for e.g.  ask questions to elicit information regarding childhood activities if you are to explain “used to”.
2. While eliciting, model the structure (i.e -used to)
3. Highlight the meaning and form using the board/cards/visual aids etc.
4. Check students’ understanding by:
                a. asking  yes -no /wh questions/
                b. students ask questions to one- another
                c. give to each student a gap-filling sentence
                d. play a game aiming to repeating the structure
5. Summarize the rule  ( used to + verb ….)
6. Restricted practice (in class)
7. Independent practice (at home)

While presenting new language items, I try to bear in mind some DOs and DON’Ts.

DOs
a. Involve learners in the process
b. Always check that they have understood
c. Highlight the form and use
d. Remember that different learners have different preferences for how language items are presented.

DON’Ts
a. Give a lecture about grammar
b. Always use the same presentation technique.
