Be the Guide!
There is a saying that many people have made use of it in different contexts.
“ Give me a fish and I will eat one day. Teach me how to fish and I will eat all my life”.
When it comes to English teaching we realize that it is so true . All students need guidance, no matter their age, their experiences, their background contexts, their social status etc. What is important not to forget is that our students appreciate at the same time independence, individualism, power, and reward. Reward is what they get at the end of each class, each semester, each level they finish.
It’s not easy to be a teacher. It’s even more difficult to be an inspiring teacher. It’s up to us to take our students to that spot where they will learn how to fish by themselves. The key is to blend together what they have, the raw material, what they bring in our classes:
– Motivation
– Indipendence
– Background information
– Appreciation
– Eagerness
– Will
At the end, both parts will be rewarded.
